The Role

Blue Ocean Seismic Services is seeking a highly capable Systems Engineer with a
broad background, to support the development and testing of bespoke uncrewed
underwater vehicles (UUVs).
The successful candidate will work with electronic engineers, software engineers,
mechanical engineers, and production personnel to design, model, integrate, test,
and validate electronic components, electro-mechanical assemblies, and subsea
systems used in maritime robotics applications.

large numbers of intelligent, long endurance, uncrewed underwater vehicles
These Blue Ocean developed UUVs are capable of multiple autonomous seabed
repositions to allow rapid, remote repositioning of deployed seabed receiver arrays
without the need to recover and redeploy by ROV. This, in combination with
automated launch, recovery & handling systems, rapid deployment/recovery, and
intelligent system control, allows for optimisation of seismic acquisition survey
operations and removes the requirement for ROV vessel support.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Relevant experience relevant to primary responsibilities, described above.
  • Engineering team leadership experience.
  • The candidate should possess a deep understanding of the engineering
    principles and concepts that spread across all disciplines (electronic,
    mechanical, software) and the ability to apply those principles to unique
    systems for the underwater domain.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Sciences
    and extensive. Or an MS with some relevant experience. Years of experience
    may be substituted for a degree.
  • Experienced with programming languages for scripting such as C++, C#, Java,
    Python, etc
  • Experienced in the operation of electronic test equipment including
    oscilloscopes, multi-meters, power supplies, function generators, etc.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work without close supervision.
  • Strong, effective, and professional communication (written/verbal) and
    interpersonal skills.
  • Strong interest and curiosity in new technologies and their applications
    related to UUVs.
  • Ability to take initiative in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues;
    creative and methodical in determining approach or action to take.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Maritime robotic systems and/or ocean engineering experience greatly
  • Prior development experience with uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs)
    and associated operating paradigms, electronics, sensors, buoyancy
    hydraulics, propulsion, actuator control and monitoring, including RF,
    acoustic and satellite communications.
  • Demonstrated experience with requirements management/traceability
  • Demonstrated experience in managing system budgets (SWAP etc.)

General responsibilities:

  • Lead a multidiscipline engineering team including work task prioritisation,
    assignment and review.
  •  Provide recommendations and forward thinking for effective and intelligent
    system/subsystem design.
  • Perform engineering design analysis to establish validity of designs
  • Develop and maintain requirements documents, concept of operations
    documents, interface control documents, and operations manuals.
  • Select, specify, develop, modify, integrate, and evaluate sensors, actuators,
    communication devices, cabling and connectors, and electrical components
    (including COTS modules) for both subsea and related surface interface
  • Create & manage project plans to track development activities
  • Review mechanical and electrical drawings for compliance with approved
  • Perform mechanical and electrical assembly and testing of prototype
    hardware in the lab and in a marine environment.
  • Develop project test plans and test procedures, provide test planning
    support, and lead the execution of both lab testing and offshore testing.
  •  Conduct electronic testing on hardware for digital and analogue circuitry.
  • Conduct experimental tests on equipment, evaluate results, and develop
    specifications for deliverable systems & subsystems.
  • Investigate and determine root cause of product issues during testing and
    determine appropriate resolution.
  • Provide field support planning, shipboard at-sea testing and technical
    operational support.
  • Interact with stakeholders, suppliers, and partners.
  • Prepare and present design review materials & test results for technology
    executive and project stakeholders.
  • Occasional travel and work offshore to support test and validation exercises
    will be required (<10%).
