The Role

The UUV Engineering Project Lead will lead the development of Blue Ocean Seismic Services (‘BOSS’) revolutionary underwater autonomous vehicles, driving a multidisciplinary technology team. The role is primarily focused on the design of the UUVs, prototype manufacturing, interfacing with other BOSS teams and reporting to line managers and stakeholders. This role will suit someone with an Inquisitive mind – keen to explore novel approaches to problems (ie not constrained by current practices or approaches)

BOSS is an established and innovative tech company with strong shareholders including BP. Our vision is to disrupt the Marine Seismic industry through the development of a large-scale autonomous ocean bottom seismic data acquisition system, resulting in a step change reduction in the cost, time and HSSE risks required to acquire high quality OBS data. We help our clients to reduce their carbon emissions and their carbon footprint.
BOSS is developing a revolutionary, integrated seismic acquisition system based around long endurance, self-repositioning robotic ocean bottom nodes.

These nodes are capable of multiple autonomous re-positions to allow rolling of the receiver array without having to recover and redeploy nodes. This, in combination with automated handling systems, rapid deployment/recovery and intelligent system control, allows for optimisation of seismic acquisition survey operations to minimise duration and cost, and removes the requirement for ROV support.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • BEng / MSc or equivalent degree in the areas of Engineering, Physics, or Interdisciplinary technology.
  • Proven experience in the design of subsea electromechanical robotic systems.
  • Several years of project and team lead experience.
  • Experience in Computer Aided Design,
  • Experience in C++ 32-bit microcontroller coding.
  • Experience working in fast paced, high growth, dynamic companies and proven ability delivering projects in time.
  • Extremely organised and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work with tight time schedules.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis.
  • Experience in RF and satellite communication systems.
  • Experience in acoustic communication and localisation systems.
  • Experience in hydraulic systems.
  • Experience in UUV development from concept through to product
  • Experience / awareness of buoyancy propulsion systems and concepts

General responsibilities:

  • Lead a small team of engineers to successful completion of the BOSS UUV development programme.
  • Execute, in collaboration with the team, complex multidisciplinary design projects involving mechanics, electronics, and software.
  • Evaluate and provide leadership in electrical design of automation control units including microcontrollers, wiring best practices, motor controls, and sensor performance.
  • Evaluate and provide leadership in mechanical design of subsea systems including hull integrity, hull efficiencies and manufacturing challenges.
  • Ensure best design cost optimization.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and their implications based on cost, reliability, availability, and time to market.
  • Monitor team’s work to ensure project is completed on time, effectively and within budgets.
  • Exchange project or technical information with team members, other teams in BOSS, stakeholder, vendors and contractors at formal and informal meetings.
  • Keep technical documentation always up-to-date and write reports of the activity.
  • Define system and subsystem engineering requirements from stakeholder requirements.
  • Define test procedures for the verification of the design requirements and manage the test cycles, including sea trials.
  • Set and follow plans and schedules throughout the life of the project optimising use of the available resources.
  • Ensure alignment with strategic or corporate objectives.
  • Conduct risk analysis to identify, prioritize and mitigate risks.
  • Oversee equipment contracts and interface with vendors to implement 3rd party design and production.
